Your New Website Might Be Confusing Google
A new website should be a step forward. Fresh design, updated copy, a better story. But here's what almost nobody tells you at launch: a redesign can quietly confuse Google and the AI platforms about who you are — right at the moment you're most proud of how you look.
Here's why. Google and the AI engines don't know your business the way a person does. They assemble an understanding of you — an entity — from everything published about you across the internet: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, chamber listings, news mentions, old bios, everything. When all of it tells the same story, the machines are confident, and confident machines recommend you.
Now launch a new website. New page names, new descriptions, maybe a refined tagline or an updated way of describing what you do. The new site says one thing. The other two hundred places your business appears online still say the old thing. To a machine, that's not a refresh — it's a contradiction. And when machines hit contradictions, they hedge. Your search presence gets vaguer. AI assistants describe you with old language, or blend you with someone else, or skip you entirely.
The fix is called entity consolidation, and it's straightforward, methodical work: establish one authoritative version of your business identity — exact name, description, story — then propagate it everywhere you appear, retiring the outdated versions as you go. It's not glamorous. It's the foundation everything else stands on, and it's the single most common thing missing when a good business can't figure out why the new website didn't move the needle.
If you've launched a new site in the past year — or you're planning one — the smart move is to check what the machines currently believe about you before assuming the redesign fixed it. That's exactly what an AI Visibility Audit measures: what Google and the AI platforms actually say when someone asks about your business.
