Before Q4: The 15-Minute Visibility Check Every Maine Business Should Run

The fourth quarter does not sneak up on your customers. They are already planning — holiday orders, year-end projects, winter services, gift decisions. Which means the searching has already started. The only question is what they find when they look for a business like yours.

Here is a 15-minute check you can run today, no tools required.

Minute 1–5: Search yourself like a stranger. Open a private browser window — not your own logged-in browser, which flatters you — and search your business name plus your town. Then search what you do plus your town. Are you there? Is the information right? Is anything showing up that contradicts your address, phone, or hours?

Minute 5–10: Ask the machines. Ask ChatGPT or another AI assistant: "Who is [your business] in [your town], Maine?" and "Who should I call for [what you do] near [your town]?" More of your customers ask this way every month. If the AI does not know you, hedges about where you are, or — worse — confuses you with a business somewhere else, you have found something worth fixing. That confusion has a name: entity drift, when the internet’s picture of your business falls out of sync with the real thing.

Minute 10–15: Read your own Google Business Profile. Open it like a customer would. Are the hours current? The photos recent? The categories right? Is there a post from this season — or does the profile look abandoned? Google treats a neglected profile the way customers do: as a reason to keep scrolling.

If all three checks come back clean, congratulations — go have a good Q4. If any of them made you wince, that wince is fixable, and the fix is worth far more in September than in December, because visibility compounds: every week your information is right is a week the search engines and AI models grow more confident about who you are

Smith Digital Solutions — Maine’s Visibility Consultant — offers a free Visibility Baseline Scorecard that does this professionally: a plain-language report of exactly how Google and the AI platforms see your business, and what to fix first. Get found. Get calls. Get paid — starting before the season, not after it.
